“Oh. My. God. Black cherry cheesecake gelato!” Heather snatched the freezer door open and grabbed the pint from the shelf. Want one?”

Nina shook her head. “The plastic container of that brand freezes my hand. I’ll stick with Ben & Jerry’s. She plucked a pint of Chunky Monkey. “And my mom just wants chocolate. She likes the store brand.”

“Ugh.” Heather wrinkled her nose and indicated the freezer aisle with a wave of her hand worthy of an expo model. “There are literally hundreds of ice cream options. Why would she pick that one?”

“She says the taste is better.” Setting her pint in the red plastic basket on her arm, she took Heather’s from her and set it in as well, then went to the end of the aisle where the cheaper ice creams were shelved. She selected a half-gallon of store brand chocolate and put it in the basket. “Okay, ready?”

“You know what would be awesome? Dreamsicle Floatinis!”

“The fuck is a Dreamsicle Floatini?” It sounded alcoholic.

“Vanilla ice cream, vodka, and orange soda!”

“Ugh. Gross.” It sounded pretty yummy, in fact, but Nina wouldn’t be having one until next summer, at the earliest.

“You’re such a teetotaler tonight,” Heather complained, but didn’t push harder.

“Just not in the mood. C’mon. If we don’t hurry, I’m going to get a text with thirty ice cream emojis and my mom will sprain her texting finger. She’s only got the one.”

It was a longstanding joke between them. Her mother texted using a single index finger, holding her phone at her face and squinting, each letter getting an emphatic tap.

Heather laughed and gave up her impulse for alcoholic ice cream beverages. They headed down the aisle toward the checkout.

At the end of the aisle, a cart came around the corner and slammed into Nina’s hip, nearly knocking her into Heather.

“Jesus! Watch where you’re going!” the pusher of said cart snapped. She was a tall, rail-thin woman, probably pushing forty, with long hair in a freshly done blue ombre dye. She wore jeans and a snug black beater, showing arms and chest covered in ink.

Nina opened her mouth to snap back that she was the one who’d gotten hit, when all the words jammed at the back of her tongue and her brain stalled out.

David was standing behind this woman.

Shock at seeing him loosened her tongue but didn’t restart her brain. She said, “David! Hi!”

“Hey … Nina,” he said. Quietly, uncomfortably.

For a single beat, Nina didn’t understand why he’d look so pale and awkward. They’d had a great weekend in Santa Cruz, and they’d started to get to know each other before that. She really liked this boy, and thought he really liked her.

Then she shifted her eyes back to the woman. His mother, obviously. The dreaded Denizia.

Who was glaring at her with such fury Nina took a step back.

“Nina? This is Nina?”

David didn’t answer, but his mother didn’t need one.

Her features twisted into a Halloween mask of disgust, and she made a show of looking Nina up and down.
